![]() McCracken’s 1996 debut novel, The Giant's House, is the story of a Cape Cod librarian who falls in love with a man who grows to be 8 feet tall. ![]() Twitter has become a place for authors to air their prelaunch jitters and witticisms, and although the 52-year-old Austin-based author has published two story collections, two novels, and a heart-rending memoir, her tweets confirm that launching a book never gets easier. “Then I dreamt that I showed up to give a talk to a full room but one guy rolled his eyes at me when I spoke & then 80% of the people walked out.” The punchline comes in the third tweet that immediately follows: “I must be about to publish a novel.” ![]() ![]() “First I dreamt I was looking for a childhood photo to show somebody, but in all of them I was passed out drunk & pantless,” the author Elizabeth McCracken tweeted on Jan. ![]() ![]() Addams, Starr, and several like-minded individuals lived and worked among the poor, establishing (among other things) art classes, discussion groups, cooperatives, a kindergarten, a coffee house, a lending library, and a gymnasium. From the outset, they imagined Hull-House as a "center for a higher civic and social life" in the industrial districts of the city. On September 18, 1889, Jane Addams and her friend Ellen Starr moved into the second floor of a rundown mansion in Chicago's West Side. Five years later, she visited Toynbee Hall, a London settlement house, and resolved to replicate the experiment in the U.S. This scene haunted Addams for the next two years as she traveled through Europe, and she hoped to find a way to ease such suffering. ![]() ![]() Their pale faces were dominated by that most unlovely of human expressions, the cunning and shrewdness of the bargain-hunter who starves if he cannot make a successful trade, and yet the final impression was not of ragged, tawdry clothing nor of pinched and sallow faces, but of myriads of hands, empty, pathetic, nerveless, and workworn, showing white in the uncertain light of the street, and clutching forward for food which was already unfit to eat. While on a trip to East London in 1883, Jane Addams witnessed a distressing scene late one night: masses of poor people were bidding on rotten vegetables that were unsalable anywhere else. ![]() ![]() ![]() I loved mystery series like Judy Bolton and Nancy Drew, and my DREAM was to write a series of my own. But that doesn't mean nothing can be done about them. There isn’t much to say on this review this is the usual high standard of the series, Butcher utilizes murder-mystery whodunit storytelling with themes that evocatively put and relatable. There has always been a rumor of a traitor in the white council, and this book narrowed the focus of the story on this as it begins with Morgan asking Harry Dresden for help because he’s accused of a murder he didn’t commit. Turn Coat is the eleventh volume in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, and it hammered these themes into the readers incredibly well. There are moments of glory, happiness, and there are times when we will lose, faces pain, and hopefully rises up then move on from it. ![]() Turn Coat is one of my favorite volume in the series so far, it’s up there with Dead Beat and White Night. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Simultaneous release with the Little, Brown hardcover. It's this sense of Wallace's strong desire to be appealing that will keep the listener with him throughout his sometimes difficult material. He conveys the earnestness of a young, hardworking writer, eager to make his eccentric vision accessible through its spoken presentation. A Brief Word about the Transgender Movement Throughout human history, every generation has faced its own unique challenges with powerful forces rising to disfigure the human person and distort her. These odd tropes come across with humor, even tenderness, in Wallace's sensitive reading. ![]() His literary grab-bag trademarks include off-kilter descriptive passages, ponderous lists and footnotes, and a large portion of the tape is devoted to a one-sided interview with a psychotic sexual stalker. With the skill of a veteran narrator, he adeptly retains footing as he navigates his complex and wordy prose.
